Dr.
Bruce Lehnert, a San Francisco podiatrist, is working on a medical
mission to Vietnam. This month long mission is dedicated to correcting
foot and ankle deformities in crippled adults and children.
Medical and surgical care in Vietnam is not modernized, especially
in the area of foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Lehnert feels his
group will have a great impact on the function of the Vietnamese
people and "is the next step in bringing Podiatric Medicine and Surgery
to the World." This successful program was initiated last year through
Patrick Code, DPM
and the Rotary Club of Medford Oregon.
During the team's stay at Da Nang General Hospital, Dr. Lehnert expects the team will operate on 30 to 40 crippled adults and children. Da Nang is a coastal town in central Vietnam - the theoretical location of the TV show China Beach and well known to Americans who lived through the Vietnam era. Preparations for this trip include procuring donations of medications, surgical supplies and istruments. The
team will consist of another Bay Area podiatrist and two
residents from the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Healthcare System
- where Dr. Lehnert
runs a training program.
The volunteer "Vietnam Medical Mission" is funded by donations from local and national medical supply companies, the Rotary Club of Hayward, numerous Vietnam Veterans groups and individuals. The mission is endorsed by Vietnam Veterans Groups and the Sinatra family. gEmUSA-VetNet a member of The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 464 has created a web site dedicated to the mission, including information about fund raising for the mission and its volunteers. It can be reached at www.gemusa.com/medical. The "Vietnam Medical Mission" team is seeking donations to make this trip a success. Donations can be sent to: Vietnam
